Replacing an Aging Diamond-Drag Sign with Laser Engraving

When a Brisbane client needed to replace an aging illuminated car park sign, they faced a problem: the original was made using an outdated diamond-drag engraving technique that's difficult to replicate. They came to Laser Dragon looking for a solution that would match the original exactly—same glowing effect, same professional appearance—but with modern precision and durability.

Laser-Engraved Illuminated Car Park Sign – Brisbane

The Challenge: Replacing an Aging Diamond-Drag Sign

A Brisbane client recently approached us with a unique challenge. They had an illuminated car park sign—the type where an LED strip lights up an engraved acrylic plate from the edge. The original sign was made using an old-fashioned diamond drag engraver, which creates a characteristic 45-degree slanted pattern that catches and refracts light beautifully.

However, the original sign was worn, and the diamond-drag method is outdated and difficult to replicate with modern precision. The client needed a perfect replacement — identical in appearance to the original, with the same glowing effect, but produced using modern, reliable technology.

They came to Laser Dragon because they needed someone who could understand the optical requirements of the sign, not just someone with a machine.

Our Approach: Reverse-Engineering with Laser Precision

This wasn't a simple "cut and engrave" job. It required understanding how the light travels through the acrylic and how the engraving pattern affects the glow.

Step 1: Understanding the Original

The original diamond-drag engraver created a 45-degree slanted cut. This angle is critical—it acts like a tiny prism, catching the light from the LED strip along the edge and refracting it forward to make the letters and logo glow brightly.

Step 2: Laser Settings & Pattern Development

We used our Trotec Speedy 400 CO₂ laser to replicate this effect. The key was:

  • Reverse Engraving: We engraved the back of the acrylic plate, not the front. This means the front face remains perfectly smooth and glass-like, which is essential for a professional, clean look.
  • Angle Simulation: Through precise power and speed settings, and a specific engraving pattern, we simulated the 45-degree slanted effect of the diamond drag tool. The laser creates a surface that refracts light in the same way.
  • Material Choice: We selected high-clarity cast acrylic, which transmits light evenly and produces the brightest edge-lit effect.

Step 3: Execution

Once the settings were dialled in, the laser engraved the lettering and logo onto the back of the acrylic with micron-level precision. The result was an exact replica of the original sign's glowing effect, but with the consistency and reliability of modern laser technology.

The Result: A Seamless Replacement

The finished sign was installed back into its frame with the LED lighting. From the front, it looks exactly like the original—smooth, professional, and glass-like. When lit, the letters and logo glow with the same warm, bright appearance the client needed.

The client now has a durable, modern sign that matches their existing infrastructure perfectly, without needing to replace the entire lighting system or housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you match any existing engraved style?

In most cases, yes. We analyse the original engraving characteristics and adjust our laser settings to replicate the effect.

Do I need to provide a vector file?

Vector files (AI, PDF, EPS) are best, but we can work with high-resolution images or even scan an existing sign to recreate the artwork (fees may apply for complex digitising).

What acrylic thickness do you use for illuminated signs?

Typically 2mm to 4.5mm, depending on the size of the sign and the desired effect. We can advise based on your project.

Do you supply the LED lighting?

For this project, the client reused their existing lighting. We can also source and supply suitable LED lighting if needed — just ask.
